Brilliant Breakfast, Tasty Tarte Flambée, and Much MoreLast week, I got the chance to go travelling again and got to go to Berlin in the course of a field trip organised by my university. On the one hand, I took the chance to gain valuable insight into various institutions of the Berlin art market and learned more about the city’s art trade; on the other hand, however, I gladly took the chance to explore Berlin’s coffee houses. I was excited to look out for cool, cosy, and modern cafés featuring vegan dishes and treats. So, on my first morning in Berlin, I decided to skip the breakfast buffet offered at the hostel I was staying at and went out to have breakfast at a nearby café instead, which is how I incidentally discovered the brilliant (and popular) Café au lait in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
The café is located close to the S-Bahn stop Berlin-Charlottenburg and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as desserts, hot and cold drinks, and alcoholic beverages (including cocktails). Their food offer includes breakfast creations, pancakes, and super bowls as well as pasta, salad, tarte flambée for lunch and/or dinner, and much more. There are a couple of vegan options (be it breakfast, lunch, or dinner dishes) available as well. Thus, the Café au lait is not merely a café, but a great place to stop for a bite to eat or to have a drink at, too. Plus, food and drinks are served in cosy yet stylish surroundings, which round off the café’s lively atmosphere. However, I especially tried out the Café au lait breakfast offer, which is as versatile as it is delicious: guests can either indulge in one of the café’s ample “creations”, try a sandwich, omelette, or have pancakes or a bowl of Bircher muesli; or they decide to share the well-liked “Le Café au lait” breakfast for two. So, after visiting the café on the first and second morning of my Berlin trip, the Café au lait appears to be a great place for everyone at (almost) any time; be it families, friends heading out for drinks, pensioners reading their newspaper, and veggies or vegans. Plus, you can head out for a walk to the Ku’damm (which is a roundabout ten-minute walk) or towards Charlottenburg Palace (which takes about 25 minutes) after your time at the café. In case you do decide to visit the Café au lait, you should keep in mind, though, that the café does not accept debit or credit cards, but cash only, and that it tends to be a little busy throughout the day, so you might want to consider booking a table beforehand. However, if you are looking for a cool and welcoming place to eat out at in West Berlin that has been serving its customers with delicious food and drinks since 1980, the Café au lait is your place to be.
